shift light suggestions???
shift light suggestions???
I would like to add a shift light to my car so I can be more consistant on my shifts. But I don't want to add a after market Tach. What brand shift lights are yall running? And how much of a pain in the axx are they to wire??
Thanks
Thanks
Cheap tachs are cheap. Like many other things, you get what you pay for.
I don't even use a high tech tach. A simple 2 1/2" from the local auto parts shop is all I need. I use it to watch the rpm when I'm warming up the engine or doing a burnout. After that I strictly concentrate on the shift light.
I use a Holley Annihilator ignition. It has 2 seperate rpm switches built in. I use a simple light with an LED light (12 bulbs) in it as a shift light. The ignition is digital so the accuracy of the light is much better than an analog light. MSD stuff that still uses rpm "pills" is analog. Heat and cold will affect the resitance of those pills.
If you have the money, buy an Autometer playback tach with shift light. Not the tach that just shows the peak rpm but one that records the rpm of an entire run. Usually about 40 seconds of record time so you can record the burnout, staging and launching. It will allow you to replay a run and you can watch exactly what happened and when each shift was.

I use an Autometer tach with a built in shift light although I generally find I do better without it,lol. Autometer also makes a run recorder that turns your existing tach into a playback one. Unit is roughly 250 bucks and you'll find you will be far more consistant using one of these.
I ran an autometer, and it was good, but I couldnt fit it where I wanted it, so ai got a proform adjustable one, it works, and I can fit it where I want it, but the **** isnt very accurate, so I am guessing where it is set, it gets you close but not dead on like the autometer will. I think Im gonna switch back to the autometer, and I think ive figured out how to put it where I want it...
they arent hard to wire, the hardest thing wil be putting the wire through the firewall...

Harlan Shift Light
Small, looks good, and about the best priced **** light you can buy ($50, plus a couple bucks shipping, and $1.50 for a mounting bracket IF you need one).
Actually, I don't know of any shift light cheaper overall. The ones that might cost a few bucks less usually require pills to set the RPM, and those are not free.
Also, since you have a 97+ Camaro, you have the vent in your A-pillar. Remove the little vent cover, break out the slots on it, and shove the shift light in there. Looks pretty trick in there.

I have an Autometer light in addition to an Autometer tach with shift light. The light needs to be high so I have the light mounted with velcro against the driver side pillar so I don't have to look down. The tach is on top of the dash too so I don't have to look down. Gotta keep the eyes on the tree.
