This past 4 weeks have been...

a pain in the hind.

These past 4 weeks have been rough on me for sure. The wife is just about to explode after all the $$$$ spent on it.

1) Rear End goes out after 3 hard years racing on the 7.5" opted to go with the Moser 12-Bolt. No biggie, about one week later adn $2K have a new rear end. The 7.5 paid it's due for sure.

2) 2 weeks later tranny decided to let go, I guess the rear end shock the tranny pretty good when it let loose that the tranny decided to let go. $300 on the rebuild kit, $200 on broken parts. Lucky, I guess because if the tranny did not break the stator shaft on the pump was about to go out anyway.

3) Finally got the tranny redone and took it to the track over the weekend for some more bracket racing and the car started to slow down each and every pass when it should be speeding up (According to the DA Computer) anyway, it lost over 5mph and 1/2 second before we finally logged one of the runs. Looks like the fuel pump is going out, so off to the store, Good folks at Thunder Racing, I have a new fuel pump heading this way!

Can't wait to get all of these bugs out of the system, My track points have been going down the past 4 weeks and have not made it past the second round in the past 4 weeks. We have one more track points race this weekend and the differance between me and 3rd place is 15 points. Urg!

I can't wait for the Thunder Shoot Out Event, looking forward to see everyone again.

Re: This past 4 weeks have been...

That sucks. I feel your pain though, since we've had a bit of a ****-off year with my Dad's '73 Camaro too:
  • We wanted to paint stripes on the car this year, but instead had to get the hood re-painted because of a large crack where the fibreglass scoop meets the hood. We hoped to get the stripes done sometime soon, but now the fibreglass is cracked on the other side. FWIW, the car was just painted in early 2003.
  • End of June - early July, we had to completely rebuild the engine. It barely had ~2000 miles on it, but an intake gasket split, water poured into the top of the motor, wiping out the cam, and in turn, all the bearings, and even the pistons picked up metal and were damaged (on a positive note, the new engine is much better than the old one though ).
  • 3 weeks ago at the track, 2nd run of the night, blew the driveshaft on a hard launch - both U-joints shattered, and one of the ears on the end of the driveshaft snapped! We picked up a used driveshaft though really cheap and thought everything was okay, until:
  • ...just realized yesterday that the transmission is f****d. The case split near the front, and something bent or broke inside, because if you try to turn the input shaft by hand, every few turns, it locks up completely. My Dad only realized that after he put the driveshaft back in and tried to drive the car.......it made some god-awful grinding noise when he tried to drive it.

Soooooo, now we're trying to decide whether to find another 4-speed tranny somewhere, or just swap in a TH350 that we already have.

Yuck, that sucks.
Just got to get something better and stronger on the drivetrain.
I still have the stock steel shaft with 1350 Yoke on the rear-end side and still the 1310 yoke on the transmission side. Maybe over the winter time I will swap out and get a set of 1350 yoke on the tranny side.

I know that the TH350 swapped has came across my mind, I know someone here in my town that done the swap. It sounds pretty much staight forward.

As long as the tranny still gets me by I'm still going to run the 4-Speed Tranny. When I start to blow it up twice in a season the 3-Speed will go in.

As far as I've read (can't speak from personal experience) the 4L60E CAN be built to take a lot of power, but it does cost a bit of money, and you need to take it somewhere that really knows WHAT they need to have in them. I guess that's where a TH350 swap comes in, if you can do it cheaper than having a 4L60 built, eh?

Re: This past 4 weeks have been...

Pretty much stayed the same, just added the 12-Bolt and went to 28" tires with 4.11 gears. Other than that it's the same.
I'm looking forward to the race, I'm plannin on being there early this year (Friday Night) so I can get in some bracket racing action. Looks like Saturday would be a good day to do some grudge racing for sure.

Mine is getting pulled over the winter, just going to freshing the motor up, the rings are pretty much shot, might even throw a different cam in it. Other than that it's going to be the same motor.

Where's the party Saturday Night?
