LT1 rears, Max narrowing, what mods?

Just curious what guys have narrowed their rears or ordered LT1 stle rears that are narrowed. I hear thet we can do 4" w/o e-brake clearance issues. Is this true? Has anyone done more?

thanx

put a 4 link in it and take 8 inches off each side. haha, i did. on a stock style set-up though, i believe 3-3.5 is the most you can go without moving any brackets or anything.

Yeah. for me that's alot of trouble and added expense to do a four link. It sounds cool though. I need to know how much it can be narrowed for sure.

thanx

Just look at it and see where the brackets are. You could shorten the axle tubes up to that point without re-engineering the whole rear suspension, obviously. However, I am not sure what it would accomplish as the inner fender well will still limit how close to the centerline the inner edge of the wheels and tires can be located.

My goal is to keep the tire/wheel in the same position as a 10" Weld wheel w/7.5 back space but with a 5.5 b.s which would require narrowing the rear 2" per side. It's mainly cosmetic but their are some benefits to centering the hub in the wheel.

There's a guy who posts on fbody.com ("bigblocktransam") that narrowed his 9-inch asembly 2" on each side so he could use wheels with less offset. There's some pic's of his car in this thread:

Pops and I narrowed ours 3 inches per side.....but we hade to move the panhard bracket over and shorten the bar accordingly....looks cool 15x10 Convo Pro 5 inches of backspacing and a minitub..looks killer with the 325/50 Drag radial all under the car. And we kept the park brake cables.

just got thru narrowing a 9 inch to go under my car. with 15x8 with 5 1/2 offset 28x10.5x15 m/t slicks axle flange to flange came to 60 1/2 ". that centered the wheel and tire under the car. thats with strange axles @ 28 1/4 & 30 1/2 axle lengths with a spool. it took me about two weeks but it was cheaper the buying one from moser or strange outright..

Did you make a jig or buy one to keep the tubes straight?

Best thing about narrowing any diff and using a rim with very little offset to move the wheel back out to a normal position is that you get very short axles. A shorter axle will twist less than a long one.

borrowed a jig, then copied it. i got some 1 3/4 chrome rod from work and he had a lathe in his shop, in about 2 1/2 hours later he had made the same jig that he borrowed. made the inserts out of alumnium for the housing and the carrier. big ford, small ford and 12 bolt. anything to save some money nowadays.
