Just how weak is the stock rear end on 4th Gens?

After dumping so much cash into the Camaro I just cant afford the 9" rear end since I am getting married and buying a house. The 5 thousand dollars for the rear end went towards a ring for the Fiance I have some M/T ET streets sitting in my basement. So with this much power... 500 RWHP I take it I would melt the rear end the 1st time out with slicks right? Just how weak is the stock rear end. Any things "READ CHEAP" I can do to make the stock rear end last? SO I just drive it with no traction to save the rear?

FWIW you can get a nice 12-bolt for ~1/2 of $5,000. But in any case, do not use your ET Streets with the stock rear end. Don't think that somehow adding one of those fancy covers will make a big difference.

JasonS,
well i am sorry to agree but that rear is fairly weak, especially when you say 500 rwhp! lmao! if your car is an auto it might last a little, but once you put a tire on it odds are it won't hold up that well. g'luck on what ever you decide to do.
also adding a girdle cover may help a bit but with tht kind of power it is a crap shoot????

Thanks guys thats what I thought. I jsut wanted to double check incase I missed some thing

I guess I will just run it with street tries as easy as I could and in a year or so get a 12 bolt.

Thanks again guys.

Any way to wrap a 12 bolt into your housing loan as an improvement?

With that much power its really a crap shoot. A girdle will strengthen a 10 bolt up some. But 500 RWHP and a clutch is basically taking a baseball bat to a tomato... it aint gonna last long with a sticky tire.

If you were an auto I'd say you have a shot at making it work for a while... Your best option is to keep the stickies off of it till you have 12 bolt/9" in it.

I've blown mine up twice with only 260rwhp

and that was on DR's, not even ET STreets.

since you have a 6 speed..I say dont even chance it...

* saving up for a Moser 9" myself*

I agree with what everyone has mentioned here, but I have had fairly good results with the stock rear end over the years. I finally went with a 12bolt, but I drove on my 12bolt all last year (9000miles) with ~480rw NA and a street twin. Even ran it at the track quite a bit....although only on drag radials. ET Streets would have killed it, but I drove it pretty hard at the track and was suprised how well it held up. TA cover/girdle is all it had (3.73s).

I am partially committed to finding out what it can hold.

The twin (on it's only trip to the track last year) ran 11.17 at 124 and a 1.60 60ft launching soft with a gentle tuneup and poor traction. The rear has never shown any signs of giving up (yet should be used in here somewhere).

Point is, it's been holding up for a while now. We're got a torsen and 3.42s in there along with a LPW cover. I keep the backlash down to less than minimum. We have a mushy converter too.

I think we take our spare housing and weld the tubes, add some bracing, heat-treat the gears and axles and I'd like to find a spool for it.

The 7.5 uses a lot less power than a 12-bolt (even less than a 8.5) and weighs less. We've also got spares so right now it'd not hurt much to explore this deal.

I do agree that a 6-speed and the 7.5 are just asking to part ways. With an auto, I kow for certain that someone has gone mid 10s with a 7.5 and I think with some good assembly and a careful tune....it might go quicker.

Hope I'm not wrong, but we'd not be out much if I was.

Anyone know of a spool for the 7.5...?

Same here.. I still have my stock 10 bolt but its beefed up a little. Girdle, studs, solid spacer over the crush colar, Welded the tubes to the housing ect... In an auto its doable. My best 60 is a 1.59 with normal 60's in the 1.60-1.65 range. I broke it once last spring. But it was onlt the posi that wore out. With a hard hitting converter an auto will break a 7.5 just as easy as a manual. My converter hits like a soft pretzel, thats why the rear holds up.

Yes they do make a mini spool for the 7.5. Summit caries them and they arent all that expensive either. Summit says they are for "dirt track use only"... but I belive it will hold up just fine at the drag strip. It has to be stronger than the posi in there now. What do you guys think? I'm gonna toss one in this spring when I swap out the 4.10's for 3.73's.

AHARTZ28 here in San Antonio runs in the 11.6xx range with 60 foots of 1.59. I know that on the dyno it went 397 RWHP and 450+ RWTQ. That is with a 3800 Vigilante converter. he is using the HD Carrier, a Girdle, and is getting ready to weld up the rear-end to "try" and strengthen it. He does run E.T. Streets.

I myself only push about 300 RWHP and over 340 RWTQ. I have just purchased E.T. Stretts as well. I had been running Nitto 555R's with the 60 foots around a 1.7xx range. Now that the car has had alot of suspension mods, I thought it may need a little beefing up. I have purchased a Zexel Torsen Carrier and will be buying a girdle real soon. I will replace the bearings when this all goes together and weld up the rear a little. Hopefully that will last for enough time to get a 12 bolt in the future. You can buy one easily new for $2000 sometimes only $1800 if you dont care about ABS.

I ran 9 times this last sunday with 60ft's between 1.55-1.65. It's completely stock except for a jeg's girdle. By the end of the day the driver's side tire would stop spinning while doing my burnout tho. Guess I'll buy an eaton posi and see how long she holds.

Mine lasted longer than the motor did I made countless passes on drag radials. I made 7 passes on et streets spraying it out of the hole at about 5700. 1.57 60's I took it apart and it looked good as new. The axels were not twisted a bit. Posi looked good as new. Sent it off to get cyrogenically treated and the motor blew so I never got to make any more passes. I'll fill you in when the motor is done.
