RULE BOOK STATES "The thread engagement on all wheel studs to the lug nut must be equivalent to or greater than the diameter of the stud"(example: a 7/16 stud must be engaged through the threads in the hex portion of the lug a minimum of 7/16-inch.) pg 84 in the 2008 NHRA rule book. In other words, make sure the studs stick out of the wheel when placed on hub.

In simplest terms, the stud must extent past the surface of the rim equal to the thickness of the stud.

If you're using 7/16" studs, they must extend at least 7/16" past the rim (and washer). For Weld Prostar and Draglite rims, you'll need a stud about 2-1/2" long.

There's info on the Welds, stud length, etc., in the FAQ, stickied at the top of the Wheels and Tires forum topic listing page.
