drag tire measurements
drag tire measurements
I haven't got much response from this on the wheel/tire forums, so here goes. What size tires for the following:15X7, 15x8, 15x10?
Which combo is the best compromise b/t streetable and traction:15x7, 15X8 or 15x7, 15x10 or 15x8, 15x8 or 15x8, 15x10? Car will be on street only on warm, sunny days. Plan on using MT ET street radials.
Finally, someone help me with tire measurements on drag tires, please. Example-26X10.5-15L or 28X10.5-15L. Break it down for me. what does the 15L stand for etc...I have suspisions, but I want to be sure.
Thanks!

First number is the tire height, 26, 28, 30" etc
On a slick, the width, 10.5 etc, is the width of the tread. The width of the sidewall will be greater.
On a DOT tire, the width on the tire is the width of the sidewall. The tread will be smaller.
A 28x9 race slick will be about the same size as a 28x10.5 DOT tire.
That 15 is the rim diameter. What kind of tire are you looking at to see an L? The only letter classification I can find on MT tires is LT which is on all the ET street tires.
The width of the rim depends on the tire width. The manufacturers will give a recommended rim size for each tire. You can go about 1-2" either way.
There is no speed rating on a slick. A speed rating is a number that determines how fast a tire can go before it heats up to a critical temperature during prolonged high speed use. Slicks are designed to heat up. That's why we do the burnout in the water box. On a 1/4 mile pass, the tire isn't going at a high speed for a long enough time to heat up enough to cause a failure.
