Lightbulb changing gears

My best time so far has been a 13.665 @ 102.5 with a 60ft of 2.25. All that was with a broken motor mount, broken transmission mount, other motor mount stressed, stock LCA's, no HPP3 (helped a lot after install, really, it did)

I'm going to get 3.42s and a TA cover sometime in the next 6 months or less. Now, my tires may be new by then, but right now they are pretty low on tread, however the LCA's help a lot.

What do you guys think i could run with that. What kind of improvement would i be looking at (assuming I got a good launch).

Thanks

If you are going to change gears, why not go to 3.73s instead of 3.42? Your time is pretty respectable already, I would think gears and stickier tires would get your 60' times down below 2.0 and get times down .3 - .4 minimum. Mike

I would go with 3.73's also. The MPG loss will be negligible over the 3.42's but the omprovement might be .1-.2.

Why does everyone tell me to go to 3.73? I don't want those. I like my top end. 3.73 is too high for me. If I spent more time at the track, maybe. Also I'm not allowed to get stickier tires. Oh, the last time I went to the track:

with all the broken stuff: I pulled a 14.2 @ 105.1 60ft of 2.3
very confused,.........................

anyway, with my 3.42 GEARS, what do you think i'll run???

Thanks for the advice guys, but I don't want 3.73s.

I'll tell you from my personal experience, and you can figure it out from there:

If you don't get GOOD tires for the back, changing gears is almost a waste of time.

This past spring, I put 3.73's into my car, and went to the track. Wanna know what the "improvement" was? NONE. The car still ran 13.43 (at best) but at only 104 mph instead of 106. On average though, it was running mostly 13.6's, which is what it still averages with 2.73 gears?! The 60' times were still about the same as well, 2.0 - 2.1, but I know the car would have done MUCH better if only I had TIRES (either BFG drag radials or Mickey Thompson E/T Streets).

SO, if you really want to change the gears in your car, great, but don't EXPECT anything better than what you currently run unless you can put the power to the ground, because with the lower gear ratio, the tires just want to spin forever, vs they just hook up with 2.73's.

Also, I don't blame you for stopping at 3.42's and not 3.73's. The 3.73's were absolutely JUNK on the highway.................I got completely smoked by an '03 Cobra when I know that the car would have done way better with the 2.73's in it.

looking at the times in your sig an 03 Cobra would have smoked you no matter what gear you had. R-west gained 3 mph when he switched to 3.73 gears, I gained 6 mph (in a mustang) when I went to 4.10's over 2.73's. The fewer the mods though the less gain you will see.

the best tires I'm allowed to do right now are the Kumho 712's. Money is kinda tight,, and for $107 apiece, you can't beeat the performance. They don't hook up the best at the track, but they do hold corners very well. My LCA's from BMR have helped a lot with straightline accel. Haven't tried the track since i installed em though.

I'm not saying he still wouldn't have beat me, but TRUST ME, it wouldn't have been by nearly as much. The thing is, we were cruising at about ~80 mph when the guy in the Cobra hit it. With the 3.73's, when I punched it, the transmission stayed in OD (4th) instead of downshifting to 3rd. Since I try not to "argue" with what the auto tranny wants, I didn't want to pull the shifter back into 3rd incase I over-revved the engine. HOWEVER, with 2.73's, when I punch it on a roll upto ~85 mph, the tranny will downshift to 2nd gear and the car pulls like a bat out of hell upto ~120+ mph like nothing! The night I raced the Cobra, it took forever just to hit 100-110 mph (because of trying to "accelerate" in OD ).

Just for the record, let's not even DISCUSS "should've got a 6-speed".
