Best Option For My Setup?
Best Option For My Setup?
I was wondering what would benefit my car the most based on the setup in my sig.
1. I can go from a 2800 stall to a 3800 stall
2. I can go from 3:23 gear set to 3:73s.
The car has run a best of 12.2, 60' is 1.7's.
Out of the options above what would you do and why? Looking to put the car into the 11's. The problem is the car is a little on the heavy side withthe audio equipment.
Thanks,
Bill

I would think a higher stall but that may be a little harsh on the streets. I did my gears first and couldn't be happier. Gained about .2-.3 with a full bolt on car. So my vote it for gears
Re: Best Option For My Setup?
What kind of tires are you using? Unless you can hook it up, increasing the torque at the starting line won't help. If you are running street tires, you probably won't see much gain from either.

I'd recommend gears to 3.73s, have your vig restalled to 3600 or whatever Vig recommends ( note: my Vig 3600 acts like a stock converter until you nail it...), and get a set of 255 50 R16 M/T radials on 16x8 stockers...Those 3 things should put you solidly in the 11s...Whats your mph?

you could probably get away with leaving the 3.23s, but the gears and converter will work together with the cam and really help you out...

Back when I had a 383, I was running high 11's at 117 mph with 26" tall slicks and 3.27 gears. TH350 with a 3800 stall 10" converter. Gearing was all wrong though. I was shifting at 6800 and crossing the finish line in the low 5000 range. Changing to 4.10 gears and a slightly taller tire got me into the low 11's and I was now crossing the finish line at around 6800 rpm.

3.73 gears w/ a taller 17' street tire isn't too radical for the street, along with a mild stall converter around 2400-2600. Also, a cam that isn't too radical can be completely streetable.
It is a lot of fun adding each performance part, then seeing what the car will do at the track. You do however need an overall plan to ensure the parts you select will perform well together (gears, stall & cam in the correct torque range).
Don't be afraid to add some performance parts, most parts won't affect streetability that much if you don’t go too radical.

Thanks for the input.
Al, do you ever get down this way (Ann Arbor) in the summer?
