Once you install a good converter (possibly a 3200), you will want to experiment with the launches. Most of the new high-tech converters like to be flashed off the line, rather than attempting to just stall it up to the max.
And yes, a good stall converter with traction (slicks, DRs) can drop your 1/4 mile ET five tenths or more. Also, automatic transmissions are very consistent for drag racing.

Flashing is when you sit with your engine at or just above idle 'till the third light comes on then it's off the brakes and slam the gas down. What this does is to soften the hit to the tires. As the engine is going from say 900 rpm to the stall speed the car is already starting to move so as the big torque hits the tires they are already hooked up and rolling slightly.
Stalling up is when you hold the brakes as hard as you can while pressing the gas pedal raising the rpms to the point just before the car rolls or pushes thru the lights. Then on the 3rd yellow it's again off the brake on on the go pedal. But the car is still stationary and all the power hits the tire hard. If your ssupension isn't right on then you blow the tires away.
That's why most people report getting better 60s flashing, it's because their tires will hold better that way. I stall up and hit 'em hard with the tires up and the numbers in teh sig.

My converter allows me to brake stall up to 2500 rpm's. Any higher and my tires start to break loose. When I stall to the max I don't get my best launches. When I flash off idle I get close to my best launches but not quite. My car gets the best times (including my current best) within the 1500-2000 rpm range.
This may change when my setup changes. But for now I have only gotten into the 1.6x 60' range when I bring up the revs to about 2000 and floor it from there. Flashing off idle for me gets 1.70-1.72 which is good but not quite my best.
