NHRA has dropped the new rule change for T-top cars. The rules are back to the original ones.

All cars need a roll bar at 11.99. A roll bar is good to 10.0 as long as the floor or firewall are unmodified. A roll cage is required at 10.99 if the floor or firewall have been modified. All cars need a full cage at 9.99 or 135 mph.

There must have been a lot of complaints from T-top owners not just F-bodies about the roll cage rule in the 10 second range who still had original floors and firewalls.
Where did you hear about this? The 10/23 posting by the NHRA is still on their site.

Any links for reading confirmation of it? I'll be incredibly happy if this is true. While I don't plan on 9's for my Z, I would like to see 10's.

I guess the handfull of 10 second "street" cars with T-tops will just have to install a cage.
Or they just won’t run at the track and stay on the street. I really hope it’s true about the rule being dropped. I just wonder how much of this is due to the insane insurance costs at racetracks these days?

I’ll probably put a 6-pt in the car, if for no other reason than a more rigid structure. I really didn’t like the idea of cramming all 6’4 of me between a 10-pt.

Heres a copy of the rule I got from NHRA TECH.

Charlie,
No rule change is being implemented for T-Top design vehicles.

As required before, a roll bar will be mandatory in all cars, including T-Tops, which run 11.00 to 11.99.

A roll cage is required on all vehicles 10.99 and quicker except as noted below.

This is no different that before.

When do I need a roll bar or roll cage?
A roll bar is required in any convertible running 13.99 seconds or quicker in the quarter mile, and in other cars beginning at 11.99. The roll bar is accepted in vehicles running as quick as 10.00 second e.t., provided the stock firewall and floorboard is intact, other than for installation of wheel tubs.

If the floor and/or firewall has been modified, then a full roll cage is required beginning at a 10.99 e.t. A full roll cage is required in any vehicle running 9.99 seconds or quicker, and any vehicle running 135 mph or faster (regardless of e.t.).

Hope this helps,

NHRA Tech Dept.

Thanks for tracking this down and posting it. I've been pondering the conversion to a full cage for quite a while... and at least this still leaves it open as to whether I attempt to run under 10.00.
