Using TC With EPROMs
Using TC With EPROMs
Can someone explain the whole process of using TC on cars with replaceable EPROMs like a 93 F-body? I understand needing the def file and needing the EPROM eraser/burner. I'm guessing you still read the program out through the ALDL connector but how do you burn the changes to the EPROM? Does the burner connect to your serial port and you burn it that way?
i use the pocket programmer,
first you remove the prom from the ecm, then you start your programmer software, then you pick the type and size of prom you are using, them you use the correct adapter and connect the prom to the programmer, then you read the prom to your computer and save the file
then you start tc and open your bin file and make the changes needed and save the file with a new name
then you get out your UV-prom eraser and remove the cover and sticker from the prom, place the prom in the eraser and turn it on for about 5 min
then go back to your programmer software and make sure you have the correct prom type and size selected, then hook the prom back up to the prom burner/programmer and check to see if it is erased, if it is erased , load your modified bin file to the burner software and program the prom with the new bin
after it has programmed sucessfully remove the prom from the programmer/burner and put it back in the ecm
i am now using the Ostrich - Real Time ECM Emulator from moates, this makes tuning a prom ecm much faster and easier, actuall real time prom emulation, you can make prom changes while the engine is running, this works with the tunercat RT-tuner software

Thanks. That helped. So do all EPROM programmers come with software to create bin files or is there generic software that works with anyones hardware? I'm guessing that you connect the programmer to your computers serial or USB port
the pocket programmer plugs into the printer port, the programmer/prom burner you buy should come with software to make the programmer work, it doesnt actually make a .bin but it allows you to take the .bin file from your prom and save it to your pc so you can open it with tunercat or whatever tuning software you decide to use
I use the pocket Programmer 2 with flash proms (no UV Eraser Needed).
there are USB versions out there that are powered by the USB Port (no need for a power brick, like the PP2 I have).
On our 3rd gens, we use a memcal adaptor since the eprom is soldered to the memcal. The memecal is piggybacked to the adaptor and the new burned prom goes onto the adaptor.
You read and write the proms with the programmer and modify them with TC or GMECM (free bin editor). I ues both TC and GMECM.
