Teach me some basics about LT1EDIT ...

I am buying a ProCharger, that I will be running on the stock bottom end for a little while. I am pulleying the D1SC down to around 6-7 PSI range.

I dont want to pay $500 for a ****ty dyno tune where I get 5-6 runs. I know that thing isnt dialed in all the way at that point. Theres more to it that AF ...

So I want to get LT1 Edit, run it on my laptop ( Or a newer one if needed, my laptop is ANCIENT, speaking of which, what are the system requirements for LT1 edit?)

I am better than your average reject with a ocmputer, but I am by no means a techie. I do understand the relavance of all the sensors, and understand what they do/control on an OBD I car.

That said, how bad can LT1 Edit be to learn to use? Would I need anything else besides LT1 Edit, Cable, and Lap Top? ex. Wide Band O2, etc.

TunerCat is cheaper and can be used on multiple cars.

An ancient laptop is better, because it probably has a real serial port. In my personal and professional life I hoard older laptops specifically for these sorts of uses. The laptop I use for tuning is a P3-600.

If you understand what all the sensors do, then you're probably halfway there already.

You'll need something to scan with (datamaster). For tuning WOT you'll need a WB02.

Google for LT1 PCM tuning and you will find quite a few useful sites.

lol I am talking, REALLY old. And its a Compaq. But it was free lol.

Its like 250MHz, 128MB RAM, 6 Gig HD, and yes, it does have a "real" serial port.

What is better for tuning on an LT1? TunerCat or LT1 Edit? I dont really plan on doing any other tuning for a while aside from my LT1 stuff.

Also, Im assuming I would have to mount the WB02 as close as possible? Would the Y in the Y pipe be sufficient? Or would I need to tap in closer to where the regualr 02's are on the collectors?

Also, so what your saying is that with TunerCat, or LT1 Edit, I would still need datamaster or something like that to scan?

For the actual scanning/tuning that laptop will probably be fine. The only concern I would have is that you are probably running Windows 95 or 98 and I would consider those more likely to have a BSOD or other screwup in the middle of tuning copmared to W2k or WXP.

The other thing is that with only 250MHz/128M you will probably want to move the data to your desktop computer to do the analysis. I build some pretty big spreadsheets in Excel to sort the data out.

I'm not sure anybody can say either TC or LT1edit is better, because who uses both? I get the impression that LT1edit may be a little better documented, but I haven't used it. I got TC because it is cheaper and not VIN-locked.

I haven't gotten a WB yet, but my plan is to get the LC-1, which can be put in place of one of the stock O2s and it can feed a narrowband output to the PCM as well as the WB output. I'm going to see if I can use the rear O2 input on my car for the WB. Otherwise, a few people have tied them into the PCM using other sensors like A/C pressure or oil temp.

Yes you need something like datamaster to do tuning. TC/LT1edit just lets you change the PCM constants. Datamaster lets you see what the car is doing so that you know what to change.

You might want to consider getting a mail-order tune as a baseline, especially since you are going FI. Seems like it would be easier for a dumb novice mistake to blow up the engine with FI vs. NA. If you get the software and cable, then a tune from madz28.com is only $75. You can then use the datalogging/tuning to fine-tune his baseline.

Steve, Thanks for all your help.

I did think about that, going with a mail-order to ball-park me in ...

I'll have to look around and see what else I can find out about LT1 Edit and TunerCat.

Thanks

I have both. On my own car(95 TA M6), I have LT1 Edit. On my wife's car (95 Z28 A4) I have Tunercat.

Tunercat is much more cost effective, so I usually recommend it.

Which do you think is simpler and would be easier to learn to tune on? Which is more "idiot-proof" ? And what kind of cost differences are there? I didnt get a chance to check much out since i was sick, worked, and had tons of **** to do for college this weekend ...

Re: Teach me some basics about LT1EDIT ...

I've been looking at the two myself also. I know lt1 edit is more, but if I read it right, they have a 50 dollar add on that you can see data in real time or something like that. Looks like you can download tunercat and try it free for 30 or 60 days. My laptop is like 3 years old, so I may not have the right connector... pretty bad I dont know when I have a computer networking degree. LOL!
