Im looking in to getting a solid scan tool for my 95 z28, what do you recommend?

 

You'll probably end up with a combo OBDI/OBDII tool, as I don't think anyone makes an OBDI tool anymore. I used to recommend the AutoXray 5000 model, as it came with the cable for the '95, but they don't make it anymore. The 6000 was the next model up, but not sure if it's still available. It also came with the cable. The original AutoXray company was sold to SPX, and I don't think their newer stuff is as good as the original stuff. Look through the reviews on Amazon for the various models.

 

Some of the newer OBD-1/OBD-II scanners have a problem, because they are looking for 12V from the ALDL connector and the GM OBD-I connector used 93/94 and the 16-pin OBD-II "style" connector used with the 95's OBD-I PCM do not have a 12V pin. There is an Actron CP9145 that people have used on the 93-95 PCM's, with the correct optional Actron cable (CP9127). You may still have to add a 12V wire to the connector.

Just remember, when scanning a 95, you have to use OBD-I and you either have to have the correct 12-pin to 16-pin adapter or you have to use jumper wires as shown in Shoebox's photo:

An alternative to a hand-held scanner is free software and a cable for your laptop. Not only reads codes, but also allows you to data log the engine over an extended period of time and review the data afterwards.

i know this is an older thread but i recently purchased a snap on ethos scanner and it works fine for everything from 83 and up... its kind of expensive but its highly useful to me for playing with my car or even scanning a buddy's at work or my wifes impala for any errors.. it does data logging as well and is highly accurate with the dtc's.. can clear codes as well and can save recent vehicles and comes with tons of adapters for several difference vehicles and if your like me it comes with the brand name that is highly trusted. Most shops have a solstice or ethose scanner in them around my area.. the one and only thing i can think of that it doesnt do is function testing but for our old cars we pretty much have our own ways of doing this anyways
