Under what circumstances would you need to have your computer reprogrammed. My car has been sittting for awhile with the battery disconnected do to a bad opti with everything removed for replacement. A friend of a friend that claims to be a mechanic believes that I have a "P" engine and that it would need to be reprogrammed by a dealership. I think he is full of it. Am I correct? Thanks in advance!

 

All LT1's are "P" engines. The V6's are "S" for the 3.4L and "K" for the 3.8L. The LS1 is a "G". Just generic descriptions... has nothing to do with the PCM. The letter is in the 8th position of the VIN.

The "program" that the PCM needs to run the engine is stored in non-volatile memory. You can remove the battery for 100 years, and the program will stay there. The only thing you lose when you pull the power to the PCM is the stuff stored in volatile memory - long term fuel corrections, trouble codes and learned IAC counts. You do not need to "reprogram" the PCM just because you had the battery disconnected.
