question reading tune with tunercats

Hey guys can anybody tell me is there ANY danger or possible way to mess up the pcm when reading the calibrations? I have read quite a few threads about having trouble when programming. As of now I have a pretty good tune in the pcm right now so I don't want to take a chance of messing it up. I have another pcm I was going to use to do the tuning but it would be nice if I could get the current calibrations from the pcm in the car right now and then flash it in to the spare pcm. This way if something bad happens I will have my current pcm to go back on. So if something would happen while reading my good pcm is it possible to damage it?

I have read many threads on this and have messed up 4 PCM's in my tuning time of 8 years. All of my problems were when I flashed and never when I read. From my understanding you cannot screw up the PCM when you read only.

Before a new tune is flashed, the existing data is erased. If the tune doesnt load all the way, you have a partialy written tune, you can see how this can cause problems.

When reading though, it doesnt erase or change anything, so I would imagine it's uneffected from cable interruptions.

Plenty of people have reported that they bricked their PCMs while reading. Just search the various LT1 tuning forums.

Have my doubts, but there have been enough reports that maybe its real.

Regardless, it would be pretty silly to decide not to read a PCM because of that.

Just by reading? I can't say I have ever read that.

Post a link if that's true.

Definitely post a link, I've never heard of anyone frying a PCM by reading, only programming. I've heard of people locking up the PCM by reading it, because it doesn't send the final end command, but that doesn't fry it. All you need to do is pull the PCM BATT fuse or disconnect the battery to reset that.
