Lightbulb PROM ID Question

Like the title says I have a PROM ID question on a 93 TA w/ 6speed.

About 3 yrs ago I had a Tune worked up by GhostWheel Tech and the PROM ID was 6881.
I had a different tune for the setup I'm doing now and they set the PROM ID at 6881, cool but it didn't work the tune was way off so I went to a 3rd person.

Thier tune was better but still wasn't right and they set my PROM ID at ****
It wasn't the same as the other 2??

My question is:
Can the PROM ID # efect the way the car works?

Re: PROM ID Question

I thought the PROM ID was just random? I bet Alvin knows more about this...hopefully he'll jump in if he knows.

Re: PROM ID Question

Ya I would like to know if that matters because if it does then I have something I can fix and maybe my car will run

Re: PROM ID Question

I dont think it matters in the least, just something to identify the flash.

Re: PROM ID Question

My understanding of the PROM ID is this:

the computer adds up all the bits making up the PROM, the PROM ID is the total size of the program. I don't think it's represented in byte, kbits, etc or anything like that.

The computer will verify that it reads the same amount of infomation as the prom ID says there should be, this verifiying a properly working PROM.

In my 1993 Service Manual, there is a DTC 51 : PROM ERROR

Re: PROM ID Question

Thanks for the replys

Here is what I have come up with on my own:
I reburned the chip several times with no difference in performance.
No matter what I did it wouldn't see the ECM when I checked my SES light.

So I went to the chip that I had from the last setup on my car and checked the PROM ID and it was 6881.
I went to the 1st chip that I had burned for my new setup and it was also 6881 so I check the 2nd prgm that was made for me.
The PROM ID on the chip didn't match the other 2 so I changed it to 6881 and
reburned it.
The 1st thing I checked was the SES light and it flashed 12 x 3 so I new that part was working.
So I started the car and it ran, fans came on at the set temps, everything was working the way it should

I did notice that the car still is running very rich all around but I'm taking it to E&D High Performance to have the car tuned up better so I don't kill anything.

Re: PROM ID Question

No the car started but the cooling fans came on all the time and the car would just dump fuel like it was free.
The ECM wasn't seeing the data on the chip right so evrything was "funky" and not right and I couldn't get the SES light to work till I changed teh PROM ID.
The biggiest thing is that the ECM wasn't seeing the data or "decoding" things right.
Now I was told that the PROM ID didn't matter but I burned my chip 10 different times and got the same results: Majior screwed plugs, More than 5qts in the pan (6.5+), Screwed o2's.
I changed the PROM ID to 6881 and the fans worked when they were supoosed to,& the ECM was seeing the data right.
Now the car is still rich but I think that my Injectors ar way to big, 42lbs so I may have to drop down to 36lb Injectors to get this setup to work right.
