Problem getting Freescan to initialize

I downloaded the latest version of Freescan.

I have cables from AKM.

I can't seem to get the laptop to get any readings from the car.

Nothing at all.

Any ideas?

Com ports?

I had trouble to start with using Freescan and a USB to Serial adapter. A lot of laptops made anymore don't have serial ports so you have to use an adapter. To get mine to finally work, I used a Belkin F5U103 adapter. Depending on which COMs your computer is on, you may have to adjust the adapter setting. I put mine on COM1 since my modem is on COM3. When I launched Freescan, I selected the files I wanted the data stored in and made sure the correct COM was showing in the window and set the delay at 150 ms. I switched the operational mode to Interactive. Once all that was done, I hooked the ALDL cable to the car port, turned the key, and clicked Start.

I looked around on the net and the F5U103 works well with Freescan and Datamaster. Sometimes you have to start it and stop it to get it to finally kick in. Hope this helps.

When I pull down the COM menu I only have one option: COM4

I have a Compaq Presario 700

Two USB ports.

Does your computer have a built in serial port? Does it have a built in modem? If it don't have a built in serial port, are you using a USB to Serial Adapter?

I think it has a serial adapter but I was just using the USB port not the serial port.

Is that what I need? I was told it could work off the USB port?

Yes it can work off a usb to serial adapter. Here is some helpful information regarding this from TTS Powersystems, makers of datamaster. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view it. Datamaster Manual

Move down to pages 57-58.

Re: Problem getting Freescan to initialize

Thanx dude.

That was my next question.

I have TTS as well and wanted to know how to use the USB port instead of com3 or com4.

I'll try the datamaster guide and see if it helps.

Gripenfelter,

For what I know, I can't think of anyone who's gotten Freescan to work properly on a 93, other than the force capture function which only collects a snapshot of what's going on. I've tried it multiple times with my cars, and finally gave up and got TTS Datamaster too.
