Noob Questions about Software and a cable for 94obd1

I have searched and i'm making sure i am correct in my thinking before i get into this any further.
My goals are to:

1. Be able to check my codes
2. Be able to log whats going on with my car so i can review it and let others check it out on here to help with problems. (whats going on with fuel)
3. Have the option of tuning it later on if i deside to.

From what i have read i need

1. a cable from http://www.akmcables.com/ic.htm, but i'm not sure which one.

2. laptop

3. 1 program for scanning codes and logging?

4. another program for adjusting data?

Thanks for any help!

I bought the cable on Ebay and it came with a disk with a dozen different datalogging and tuning software. I had the laptop so its all i have ever needed. Was around $75 when i bought it.
