New to tuning... had some basic Q's

I'm new to tuning I just had a few basic questions.

For now I'm just going to load modded PCM files into my PCM I was just wondering what is everything I will need to do this right. I have the ALDL cable from akmcables (I have used it to datalog with TTS datamaster before a few times it works well) I just wanted to know what software I will need?

A friend of mine told me that I can get a free trial version of tunercats and it will work, but I downloaded it and it looks like I need the $EE definition file for my car which I will need to purchase for 20$. Once I have that file is that all I need to get started??

Also the files themselves are .lt1 files but it seems that tunercats works with .bin files... will I need to convert my .lt1 files to .bin to visualize them with tunercats? And will I be able to upload .bin files to my PCM directly? or will I have to reconvert them to .lt1?

And last, does anyone have any links that give instructions for how to do this properly? I definitely don't want to fry my pcm.

Thanks.

You will need the $EE file to use tunercat with tunes for the F-body. Once you have that you can open both .bin and .lt1 files.

And what about uploading files to the pcm? Can I upload .bin files or do they have to be converted to .lt1?

Thanks again!

lt1 files are from the lt1-edit tuner program I believe. Tunercat just uses .bin files from what I've seen so far so no need to convert back.
You want to "read" your pcm first and foremost to get your current tune in case you need to go back. Unplug the cable from the car and make your changes then. Afterwards connect back up to the car. There should be an option to "write" (could be called something else) to the pcm. This first deletes the flash memory then writes the new tune. If for any reason power is cut or the pcm gets a signal of some kind it will screw up the write. Disconnect the fan relay fuses as I have heard if they kick on it will affect the write, and looks like it kills your PCM and would need to be repaired or replaced.
Good luck with your tuning!
