New to programming - when do I need it?

I have a 1995 M6 Trans Am with nothing radical done to it yet. Just the basic freebies, CAI, 160* thermostat, Pro 5.0, and I'm putting LT headers and true duals on soon, as well as !AIR and !EGR. When the money's there, I'm going with cam/heads and a new rearend from Strange. My question is: can I benefit from getting a program such as LT1 Edit or Tunercat in the near future, or would I be better off waiting til after cam and heads? Also what program do you reccomend? Any info would be great, since I'm really new to the whole custom tuning thing. Thanks.

Any tuning will help, even if the car is mostly stock. Obviously you will benefit more if there are more mods done, but that's why most of the tuning can be done as you add mods. I myself have basically the free mods done, and I am going to be doing tuning after I get my exhaust done this spring. I am also in the process of making my own interface cable so I can save a few bucks I say go for it, but make sure you use a program that can be changed and updated when you need it (pcmforless, lt1_edit, etc...)

Exhaust does not definitely require tuning, but it helps. EGR and AIR will require tuning to get rid of the engine light. I would definitely recommend tuning once the cam install is complete. I recommend to anyone to learn how to tune the car themselves and purchase the various tuning software out there.
