I have an 85 305 that I can't get rid of the "engine light." For some reason my husband won't have someone look at it, so I just need some quick advice to confirm my thinking that I need a pro mech. This is the situation:

We were doing several things to the engine, replacing gaskets for oil leak, replacing cracked hoses, etc... After hours of tuning, we were never able to get the engine light to go out. When the engine is cold, and first started, the engine light is not on, and the car will not keep an idle. However, after 5-10 minutes running, the car starts idling, but that is when the engine light comes on and remains on.

We have increased the timing, retarded the timing, but nothing seems to be right on. We tuned to the specs under the hood, to no avail, and then just kept going back and forth. I am frustrated, and scared it is harming the motor.

You need to pull the codes and see what the light is on for, It could be on for many different reasons. You should be able to use a paper clip and short the pins A to B on the diagnostic connector under the dash and the check engine light should flash the code. I bet it is a code for something related to emmisions..........EGR?

 

Thanks. I didn't know that the code will come up by shorting the pins. I will tell my husband.
