Need help with Code 36( HI-res failure)

I did a search and didnt come up with a whole lot to go on. I've gotten this code on two different pcm's; my stock one and a madz28 one. I got on it coming home one night and at about 5000rpm it fell on its face and backfired once so I immediately let off the gas and it drove home fine. The next day I was coming out of the gas station and barely got into it and it did the same thing only at about 2500 and after that I took it easy and it seemed to drive fine to get me to my friends house. Both times my ses light came on. I got to my firends and ran datamaster on it and got code 36 and maf sensor failure. Put my stock computer back on it still did it on the way home and I still have the same codes on the pcm. Where should I start checking to see if my opti is toast? Thanks

Also on the madz28 pcm I got and EST code. I'm assuming that is electronic spark timing and it is also opti-related

I would first check the opti electrical harness for any corrosion. Look at the plug and the end down in the opti real good.

As for your other code, always give the exact number of the code, so everyone will be able to tell what it is. Some code interpretations can be wrong or too generic.

I looked at the opti-spark pigtail and it looked okay. I made sure it was seated completely. No change. I think I'm going to have to fix my MAF malfunctoin first because the car wont even idle unless I'm holding down the gas and even then it surges pretty bad. And previous to this problem my friend and I found out that if I push on the side of the MAF connector the car would shut off. Not sure how to fix the connector if it is that.

I also checked my datamaster log and the EST code was Code-41 EST open. Along with code-36 and code-48

If your MAF went bad, you can disconnect it and the car will run. You won't get good gas mileage till you get a new maf. Check out the local junk yards. That is where I got my new maf.

Sometimes a code 41 or 42 will accompany a 16 or 36 (opti problems).

Well I went ahead and ordered a new opti- from Dal in Ohio. Figured it was about due. I have only replaced the cap and rotor since I bought the car in 2000 and its been through three motors so maybe it was time(obviously).

If I can still run the car without a Maf why does the car die when I push on the side of the connector. Thanks everyone

What was up with Dal's dealership today. DId anybody try to call him. I was told my opti- would be here today and if he couldnt get it to me he would call. No call no email just a torn down car and no parts. So much for the cruise this weekend Guess its back to Jason. Pretty disappointing

All those errors can easily be caused by an electrical harness that runs beside the headers, On the passenger side beside the block heater wire, there is a harness that runs up to the PCM I belive, I can't remember 100% but I know my buddie got a set of Hooker Long tubes & burnt that harness causes all those codes to come on intermitently, sometimes it would burn the ENGINE fuse which you should check on yours, if the fuse looks melted then its 100% that, if not still check all the harnesses running beside the headers.

Hope this helps bud.

How does the your car run after the code appears, and are you getting kr? I had the same code last fall and after the ses light came on the car would run great until you shut it off,but would bog again soon after.I also had 4-5 degrees of kr that i couldn,t eliminate no matter what fuel i ran, desentized knock sensor,lt4 km.etc.Btw i,m going w/MSD opti/coil(even has a hose kit for ventilation)Also when previous owner had car the water pump leaked and killed the opti so this will be #3 and hopefully the last.

Good luck. This last one I had seemed to be good. Of course I only had it a few months. I think the most important thing is having your vent lines ran properly. I think that's what contributed to my early deaths. I didnt understand how they worked
