Need DTC Def. Help

I started my car and drove it with PCMComm hooked up and it gave me these trouble codes (exactly):
Open DTC FAN 1 OPEN FAILURE
DTC 43 ESC FAILURE
DTC 95 OIL LEVEL LAMP CKT FAULT
DTC 95 OIL LIFE LAMP CKT FAULT
NEW DTC 43 ESC FAILURE
NEW DTC 43 ESC FAILURE (These last two occurred 6 sec. apart.)

I know ESC is Electronic Spark Control, but why is setting the SES? How can I fix these? Is there a place I can go to get code definitions? Thanks for the help guys.

Thanks,
Benji

Re: Need DTC Def. Help

First suggestion is to use the DTC table that Shoebox has on his website... it is F-Body LT1 specific.

http://shbox.com/1/Dtcs.htm

DTC 43 = 43 Knock Sensor (KS) circuit

That should make that one a little clearer. You have a problem with the knock sensor or the wiring, that is causing the voltage the PCM "sees" on the knock sensor circuit to be outside spec.

There is no DTC 95 in Shoebox's list, because there is no oil life or level lamp connection from the PCM on an F-Body. pcmcomm is intended for use on all LT1's and maybe only the Corvette or Impala SS has the oil life light. But DTC 95 is not used on the F-Body. You should have found a similar code (DTC 62) for the oil temp sensor, which is only used on the Corvette.

The LT1 in the F-Body does have an oil level sensor, but it is connected directly to the dash, not through the PCM.

What was the exact number on the fan DTC? 77?

Re: Need DTC Def. Help

See, I tried this before and the fan thing came up. I wrote it exactly as it wrote it in PCMComm. There wasn't a number. I'll try FreeScan and see what kind of codes it pulls. I am running open longtubes and am getting knock retard at idle, so maybe that's the reason for DTC 43. Why does it say ESC for DTC 43? Thanks for the help.

Re: Need DTC Def. Help

I really can't tell you why pcmcomm says what it says.... I didn't write the program and I never used it. I'm telling you what DTC 43 is for on an LT1. If you don't want to believe me, maybe someone else will jump in and give you what you feel is the correct info.

And no, DTC 43 does not set because you have knock retard at idle. It sets exactly for the reason I told you... either the wire is faulty or not connected, or the knock sensor is faulty or not grounded. And, when you get DTC 43, the PCM defaults to an internal routine that gives you large amounts of knock retard, almost constantly. That's the most likely reason you are seeing the retard at idle.... the PCM can not "see" the knock sensor, so its doing what is has to to protect the engine.

Re: Need DTC Def. Help

It is only retarding 3 degrees at idle and 0 degrees while I'm driving. I didn't mean to come off like I didn't believe you, just didn't match what the program said. I'm not a master at this stuff, so I have to gather info from as many places as I can.

Thanks,
Benji
