The most basic tuning questions

I think I'm finally going to get my car. It's a 94 Z-28, 6 speed. (Please don't let it be gone!!!!!!!!!!) Anyhow, it has headers, ORY, and a flowmaster cat-back. It also has underdrive pulleys. I'll give it the intake and airfoil. By the way, is the airfoil actually worth anything?
I'm assuming it's never been tuned, so I thought I'd like to get everything I need to do it. Couldn't hurt, right? As long as I keep a copy of the original tune, I should be fine. I figure I could gain both power and mileage if I do it right. And later, when I do more mods, I could tune it myself. I hope.
So here are my questions.
What will I need to do this? I already have a laptop.
Do people seem to prefer on tuning program over another? I've seen a lot of references to LT1edit and Tunercat.
Any advice? Thanks, Don.
