Measuring timing with opti/LTCC

When dyno tuning I've found it very inneficient to do a dyno run, upload file, run, upload etc when adjusting timing.

My suggestion is this:
Using the LTCC I will apply the trigger to cause the timing retard function to enable and pull 2 degrees (starting high in the program) and then make a run then 2 more etc.
Once I get it to the point where I have peak HP by timing then upload a file with the same reduction.

My problem is two fold:
1. Last time I ran at the dyno and uploaded new tunes, datamaster showed no differences in the timing causing great confusion.
2. How can I accurately measure timing so that I know where I should be at in my tune?

Let me know,
Mike
