malf 97 and haywire speedo

OKay i've been chasing down a haywire speedo since november. I replaced the vss and now my car idles and I can see mph on datamaster which I couldnt before. I've done continuity checks on the two wires from the sensor connector to the pcm and checked them against ground. All is good. Then I checked from the pcm to the cluster and all is good. But I still have a haywire speedo which Im pretty sure is the cluster now. But what I cant figure out is that I still have a malf 97 4000ppm VSS or however is goes. Any insight?
