lt1 computer options

Hi, I am curently rebuilding a forged 355 for my firebird. I will need a way to tune it. I would like to be able to do this myself. I was planning on upgrading the computer system to an accel dfi or something similar. what possible systems are available? Any feed back or coments are apreciated. I know it will be around 2 grand+ but, I would like to know of all the options before I invest my money. Thanks.

Are you interested in retaining the Opti optical sensor, and using it as a cam reference signal?

Do you need to keep your stock PCM running in parallel for things like speedometer, PASSKEY, etc.?

What advantage do you feel that you will gain by not using the stock PCM?

I don't really understand how the opti system works. Is there any advantage or disadvantage to retaining the opti sensor. I would like the ease of real time tuning. And the feedback I could recieve after each pass at the track. I'm also interested in a better coil setup. I noticed you have 8 coils on your car. Do you use a laptop to tune yours with your computer setup?

I would like to retain my speedo. I drive it on the street about once a week in the summer. would I lose my power windows and stuff like that if I change the whole computer? I want a way to tune my car between rounds at the track as I race pretty often. Any advice you have to fit my conditions would be great. Thanks.

I'd stick with the stock PCM and invest in tuning software for it. You can get TunerCat's package with the necessary definition file for around $90. If you have a laptop, an interface cable ($90 from akmcables.com), and some data logging software, you can do everything you need with the stock PCM.
