knock sensor

i was reading on shoebox's site that the harness for the knock sensor should read 5v. but on the shematic it shows that it should be 1.6. im getting 1.8-2.3. would this cause the car not to crank or what should it be, also the resistance on the knock sensor pin to the ks housing is around 1800. is this correct?

Having a faulty knock sensor or wiring would not be a "non-run" condition for the car, but it would set a trouble code.

I assume you are reading the voltage with the connector attached? My procedure says to disconnect the harness to read the 5v. The article lists the resistance range the sensor should be. 1800 ohms would not be correct for either OBD0-I or II, but no one knows which your are because you don't give enough information.

we disconnected the the harness and tested the actual connector.

The pinout chart shows you what the circuit voltage should be, WITH THE HARNESS WIRE CONNECTED. Anything from 1.5 - 3.5V (with the harness wire connected) indicates the circuit is functioning correctly. If you are only getting a max of 2.3V with the harness off, you have a problem with the wiring or the PCM.

Are you measuring the voltage by putting the red lead on the harness pin, and the black lead on the block? Ditto with the KS.... measure the resistance from the single pin to the block.

yeah we tested the wire by taking it off of the ks and testing it by putting one lead on the wire and one on the block. it came up max around 2.xx volts. when i tested the ks itself, i checked the resistance from the pin to the block and from the pin to the casing of the ks. which measured 1800 to like 2000 ohms.

-----NOTE: This is the same car as in urgent!!! dtc 42 under fuel and ignition.

Did you check the voltage at the back of the PCM like my guide says to do when the voltage is not good at the terminal? The guide leads you through some basic steps that you seem to be ignoring.

Why don't you put your car information in your signature to make it easier for people to help you?

we found out that the battery was actually runnung low from all of the cranking. so it was giving us false readings. everything checks out good now on this, but as in fuel ignition urgent dtc42. it explains the rest of whats going on, as of now car still not running.
