Exclamation I need help with my lap top to PCM conection

I started, for the first time, tonight to try and get a read me file off of my pcm with a new cable I got from AKM cables. I downloaded the free scan software from carputing.com and the pcmread to create a .lt1 flash file, but when I go to initiate communication between the laptop and the PCM nothing happens. It just comes up with the box that has the % of completion in it and nothing happens at all.

I went ttspowersystems.com and downloaded their free ALDL cable test program and it says that it fails both the fast test and the extended test. With this I am wondering if I need a plug for the end of the cable because the site says to perform this test with it disconnected from the PCM. As for the communication break down I am hoping someone with more experience can issue me alittle guidence. I was hoping to get all this sorted out so that I can get my program that I ordered up from madz28 installed without loosing it.

Any help would be greatly appretiated. By the way the laptop I am using is equiped with windows xp and a pentium 3 processor not sure on anythingelse since its a company laptop. Thanks to whoever respond with any info that can be passed on.

Need some more info there bub. Does your laptop have a dedicated serial port, or are you using a converter? Most of the converters would not work for me, I tried several. The only way I see to have a for sure thing is to get a PCMCIA card that makes a serial port. The problem is that those converters have a hard time keeping up with the data transfer rates, and therefore you start to get errors. There are some other programs that you can use to see if you are getting communications. Try a yahoo search for a program called Freescan. It is a good logging utility and it is free. It should show you if you are getting anything at all on the data port (it has a message traffic window) If not, you probably have a loose connection. Freescan will show ANYTHING coming down the line even if it isn't the correct data.

I went through the same problem. I had to start the car first and let it run for a couple minutes. Then I shut it off and tried to connect again and it worked. My car was sitting all winter with the battery disconnected so I guess it needed to be started before it was ready to operate properly.

Thanks for your help fella's, I was all messed up with my windows xp that I was trying to use comm port 3 thinking that was the one that was running the RS232 but it ended up being port 1. The computer wasn't registering comm port 1 on the other user profile that I had going. After that I just had to play around with the programs till I figured out how to run everything else. Now that my new program is in the car runs alot better, many thanks out to Madwolf, the tune is awesome.
