hypertech questions

i have a 1996 z28 with no mods except for cold air intake and flowmaster
anyways a freind of mine gave me a HYPERTECH POWER TUNNING MODULE
part # 365122
looks simple enough to install but heres the question ,it has a red wire that that is down by the connector does this just get hooked up to a power source if so is it constant or only when key is on?

...then forget the Hypertech and get at least a mail order tune. I would not bother with the Hypertech even for free (if you are looking for power).

It will be ok for the gears and headers. Anything more than that and you would benefit from a mail order tune. Mine didn't have that extra red wire, but if it looks like it was made that way and didn't just come apart, try splicing it into a fuse that has battery power. (always 12v)

The Power Tuning Module is different than what most of us think when we hear "Hypertech".

I think mrmint69 and seawolf06 are thinking of the Power Programmer. It is able to change some parameters, letting you adjust for things like gear ratio/tire size change. You use it to program your PCM then you remove it. The thing you have looks like it stays in the car.

From the instructions it looks like that wire is plugged into one of the wires going to the PCM. I definitely wouldn't just hook it up to 12 volts without knowing for sure where it goes.

I really wouldn't bother putting it in.

Well, by the way TUNING was spelled, I figured he didn't really know what it was. I have never heard of it, then.

I had never heard of it either, just out of curiosity I looked it up. Looks to me like it would be next to worthless. Can't even correct your speedo with it, at least the power programmer would let you do that.
