full time open loop mode

Do many people run full time open loop mode, its something I wouldn't mind doing, and is there a correct way to do it so its not bad for the car or anything. I know you can just not have it come out of open loop until the car hits like 300 degrees or something crazy but that can't be the right way is it? Any input would be great.
