FreeScan vs. DataMaster ?
FreeScan vs. DataMaster ?
So I downloaded the Trail Version of Datamaster as well as FreeScan.
Waiting on a Lap Top battery so I can go actually use them and do some logging/tunning on my car ...
Why do some people pay the extra $$$ for Datamaster? It seems to display the same info as FreeScan? Just does it in a "neater" package.
Is there anything you CANT do with FreeScan but are able to do with Datamaster? I will spend the $$$ if it is worth it, but I feel like $100+ is not worth giving me the exact same information just in a more 'presentable' way ...
Thoughts?

TTS DataMaster is only for OBD-I (93-95)
I doubt many people pay anything for DataMaster. They just use the 20 free runs.
I've reviewed data files from both systems and they are similar, particularly when you review them in Excel format, which I find to be the best way to review them.

Datamaster:

Freescan:

Freescan saves as a .CSV /text file, so you can import it in to Excel as such (though I prefer OpenOffice, as it's free
).
I am going to be testing Datamaster 3.6.0 tonight.
Not many changes, but it fixes the Vista quirks and trying to get it to run cleanly with Windows 7.

TTS DataMaster has an "export" function, that allows you to define the data columns you want to export, and to export them as a .csv file. The standard DataMaster file has a .uni extension, which requires DataMaster to play back.

Freescan works with the newer OSes, I've used it on Vista and am currently using it on Win7 x64 without issue.
I haven't really played with datamaster but it looks like it has more logging of transmission data which is nice for an A4. It also has some pretty cool features built right in which can make it easier to figure out what's going on if you're not proficient with using Excel or other software to analyize your own data. Freescan is always a good place to start though and if you find yourself thinking "I wish I could do more" then take a look at datamaster.

I have yet to figure out how to log a wideband with freescan. That is the only advantage I can really think of for datamster, other than I am just more comfortable looking at the info in the format they present and I can set up graphs to check for trends when certain conditions are met without scrolling all over the place or locking a pane in excel. The auto trans functions are nice as well you can see when the shifts are commanded vs when they occur and what exactly goes on during the shift.
