deleting secondary air

I keep having code p0410 setting on my car. After inspecting the system i noticed the air pump was kinda in bad shape and the plastic vent canister had electrical tape wrapped around it. When i would start the car you could hear the pump humming for quite awhile, very loud like a bad fuel pump. I tried to repair the pump and it is much quieter now but still sets the code. Cant find these parts anywhere except the dealer and they want about 400 bucks. Some of you guys say just delete it but what is involved in that? Exactly what does the system do?

Re: deleting secondary air

The AIR system runs for about 2 minutes at startup, then shuts down. It helps burn excess fuel in the exhaust, to help heat the cats up faster, so they will get hot enough to work. If you remove the system, you need to have the PCM reprogrammed to eliminate the SES light. You may get a "system not ready" message when they hook up to the ALDL connector for an emissions check. In some states, too many "not readies" will cause you to fail. I think the mail order programmers have found a way around the "not ready" issue.

If you haven't already go to gearchatter.com and look up P0410 for your year, possibility it could be something else if you got the pump fixed.

Re: deleting secondary air

P0410 for a 1998 LS1 is AIR system performance, based on feedback from the O2 sensors. The PCM is attempting to verify the AIR system flow by turning the pump on and off. Check it on the GM OBD-II website:

Who would you recommend as a good mail order tuner? I dont have to worry about emissions where i live and i dodnt think by deleting it i will be putting that much pollution into the air. I would rather have it functioning properly but i just cant see buying the pump etc. for the money GM wants for it. Hey thanks for the help!

Re: deleting secondary air

You should be able to find a used pump cheap.... seems like everyone takes them off.

There are two VERY reliable sources for mail order tunes that are both Supporting Vendors here at CamaroZ28.com. I wouldn't hesitate to use either one of them.
