I've never trusted the Test Comm button in Datamaster.
If you have trouble connecting, it's either a laptop issue (see http://www.akmcables.com/serial.doc ), or it could be a timing issue with the ALDL. On the Serial Communications window (in Datamaster), under one of the options, you can tweak the ALDL link timing (I never can remember exactly how to get there).
If you're using a USB adapter, select the "Disable CCM Handshake" checkmark as well, and also the USB Interface in Use checkmark (also on the SErial Comm window).
Hope that helps,
Andrew

Changing the ALDL timing is only needed for the Syclone/Typhoon version of datamaster, and should not be necessary for the LT1.
If you are using a USB interface, that is probably the issue. Very few USB interfaces support the baud rate needed for the GM ALDL communication except the Belkin #F5U103 .
If you download the 'beta' version of datamaster form the TTS website beta downloads page, it is easier to make it work with the USB interfaces - there is a selection for "USB Interface in use"
