Computer Code testing
I know I am probably asking a dumb question, but is there anyway to check what code is popping up in my computer causing the check engine light to come on? I am trying to avoid a mechanic. Whatever it is I can put it on myself. My car is right at 99K miles, where the owner's manual says it is due for a check up/tune up---could that be the problem? It is running just fine, but I live in Northern Cali and I am about to drive it to Texas in a few weeks and I don't need it breaking down. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Please email me ASAP! Thanks.

What year is the car? What kind of car? Chances are the codes will have to be pulled with the proper code reader or scan tool. No use trying to guess. 1996 and up are OBDII, before that are OBDI. Two different systems. 1995 is OBDI with OBDII connector which calls for a tool that can access OBDI while having an OBDII connector.
Thanks
Yeah, unfortunately I bought the ODB II kit because of the 16 pin connector, but I spoke with the guy at Reibes and he is going to find me one tomarrow before I come in, which is reassuring. Thanks for your help; I appreciate it. If you have anymore hints to pass on, I would appreciate it - I am a former ricer and unfortunately that is where my knowledge is in - I am still learning about these motors. Thanks.
