code 48

My car is sending out code 48. Which I believe is the maf system failure code. Does this mean my maf is dead or could it be a bad connection. Is there anyway to check the maf to see if it is working?

When I had a MAF die, my car would hardly run. Is that the case for you?

No, my car runs fine. I cleared the codes and as soon as I took it for another test drive it threw the code again.

Could be the MAF sensor, could be the wiring. If you had a scanner on it, you could check the MAF readings for various operating conditions and see if they make sense, or if the MAF sensor is putting out any signal at all. You could also check the harness connector to the MAF (key in on position), to make sure you are getting +12V on the pink wire..... that wire seems to break sometimes, further back in the harness... but that is mainly on 97's. Also make sure the black wire connector is providing a good ground.

Thanks Fred, I'll check that out first thing tomorrow. I was using datamaster by the way.

According to datamaster my maf reading was 471.38 through out an entire run. So, I decide to take off my maf and have a look at it. To my surprise, the previous owner had removed the screen (or maybe my nitrous backfire blow it out)
Anyhow, I was wondering can I put a screen back in it or would I be better off just buying another maf?

Either the MAF sensor isn't working, or the wiring is bad. 471gps is the reading you get when the MAF sensor is not connected - mine isn't connected, and I see 471gps on the scanner at all times. It doesn't have anything to do with the screen being missing, unless some unidentified flying object has destroyed the sensing elements. And, the nitrous backfire could easily have wiped out the MAF sensor. Borrow one that works from a friend and see if it gives the correct flow values.
