clearing codes
clearing codes
Got a quick question, If you clear trouble codes (1994) by taking out the pcm/ign fuse and removing negative cable, and the SES light comes on again instantly after starting, that means the problem is still there?? Not to sound stupid, but after a second it comes back on after I replaced the ICM and coil
the codes were 42 16 36 84 and an O2 sensor code on the passenger side.
Do the codes stay in memory even after unplugging the PCM??

Re: clearing codes
Key off, remove the "PCM BAT" fuse in the panel on the end of the dash in your 94. Not the "PCM IGN" fuse. 30 seconds will do it. No need to remove the negative cable from the battery.
When you pulled the battery cable it should have cleared the codes. You realize that DTC 16 and DTC 36 are for the pulse signals from the Optispark, indicating you have a bad optical sensor, or screwed up harness connector. DTC 42 often accompanies this problem. It is unlikely you could have solved the problem or removed the codes with the parts you replaced. DTC 84 (assuming your car is an M6) is for the skip shift solenoid being disconnected. Unlikely that you jumped under the car and plugged it back in before you reconnected the battery cable

one more question, after I took the entire pcm out for about 10 minutes and then started the car after replacing the icm and coil, the ses light came on within one second, that would happen when the opti is bad right?? It does start right up though??

Re: clearing codes
The DTC 84 doens't turn on the SES light, so ignore that. Often, DTC 16 will set when the PCM has a brief problem "finding" the low res pulse, sometimes on startup. The car starts and runs, but the code gets stored. Might be a problem with the Opti, or it could be a problem with the Opti harness connections. If the light comes on, you have a problem, but it doesn't mean its absolutely the Opti itself.
