check engine light on and off

would a bad catalitic converter cause check engine light to come on? it's a 94 camaro 3.4 with obd1 computer. i used a jumper wire to get the codes but it doesen't work, any help would be appreciated.

You'll likely need a real scanner to get the trouble code(s). When you do, you will know what is making the check engine light come on.

There is no check in the OBD-I system for catalytic converter performance, so that is not likely to be the cause of the light.
