Can't get scanner to read HELP

My son has a 1995 Firebird Formula LT1. After reading a bunch of posts on here I bought a used AUTOXRAY XP240 OBDI scanner, I set it up for GM VIN 8th digit "P" and it was ready to scan, I clipped on two jumper wires from the 12 pin OBDI scanner cable to the 16 pi OBDII connector as shown on Shoebox's website as follows:
pin 5 GND to pin A
pin 9 serial data to pin M
I only get messages that the PCM is not responding everytime I attempt a scan.
The car died and will not start, there is no spark, so I wanted to check codes before tearing everything apart and replacig the Optispark.
With the key on the fans kick on and I can hear all kinds of relay chatter and what I think is the fuel pump.
My question is I just read another post saying to jumper 3 wires, so including the 2 wires I have already jumped do I also need the "MODE" pins jumped?
pin 6 to pin B
He said the car stated skipping and stumbling and then it raced up and down a couple of times and then stalled and wouldn't start. He had it towed home and it won't start.
What next, short of dishing out some more money and having it towed to the dealer for a scan?? He has no money but I do have a brand new spare OPTI sitting around for my project car which will also be an LT1 when finished so I can loan him my spare.

Please help.
Thanks
