Bad sensor in water-pump????

93 LT1
My fans have never worked but I've never had a temp. problem as long as I didn't set in one spot for too long.
The temp. generally runs around 180-190 consistently with no issues.

*The water-pump went out so I replaced it and the thermostat with new parts and used the coolant temp.sensor from the old pump.*

Issue.....now my fans run constantly and my temp won't come over 140 degrees according to the temp. gauge.

First resolution....unplugged the fans to see if temp.would rise.No good, still 140 degrees according to gauge.

Second resolution.....installed new thermostat. No good, still 140 degrees according to gauge.

Also, the gauge starts from 0 and rises to 140 degrees normally.

My question is this........
1.Does the coolant temp. sensor in the water-pump control the temp. gauge inside the car?
2.Does the coolant temp. sensor in the water-pump control the fans?

Thanks,
Kevin

Water Pump Sensor runs the ECM
Head Sensor Runs the Gauge.

Why they still have two I dont know.

Try scanning the ECM by shorting the ALDL pins to flash the codes on the SES light. Might turn up a code that is causing the fans to run all the time. Code might actually be for the coolant temp sensor in the water pump. If so, maybe the harness wires are damaged.

The t'stat should be staying closed at 140*F, so the fans shouln't make any difference. Do you have the correct LT1 t'stat? And.... maybe its not really running at 140*F......

You can't really judge the engine coolant temp, when temps are very low, with the 1993 dash gauge because is it calibrated in a misleading fashion. It indicates the first line is 100*F, but all other years label the first line as 160*F. Makes everyone with a 93 think their car runs cooler than other years, but they don't.
