What size diff would be on 78 Firebird Formula?
What size diff would be on 78 Firebird Formula?
Might sound like a dumb question but I know someone who is looking to find out the size of the rear in his car. I assume he's talking about the size of the diff.
I can't find anything in the archives....
Its a 350 4 speed.

Re: What size diff would be on 78 Firebird Formula?
71-81 F bods had 8.5" corporate 10 bolt. Outside chance someone could have swapped in a 70 diff, a bolt in. 70s had either 12 bolts or weaker 8.2 10 bolt. 8.5 diff has triangle shaped lugs on each side of casting bottom, makes it easy to spot. 8.2 casting bottom is round.
The 8.5 is an excellent diff. Almost as strong as the 12 bolt, has same size pinion gear as the 12 bolt. Easy to find parts for it. Used on millions of vehicles up thru the 80s.

Well, like the guy just said, it's probably the 8.5, the reason I said it's crappy is because the gears probably bite. Mine are 2.41, the ones in your friends are probably not much better! Also, I remember reading somewhere that the carrier can only go up to a certain number (high 2.XX or low 3.XX), not sure if I remember right though so you might want to read around.
Anyways, welcome to the city man.. where did you move from?
