Thoughts on this car (Round 3)

Hey, i've posted a couple times asking for thoughts on a few cars. For those that haven't seen those threads, i've been looking for a 67 or 68 to use as a daily driver in the 10-15k price range. I've looked at a quite a few piles of junk, but i may have found winner:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...EBDW%3AIT&rd=1

Thats the car, the reserve wasn't met but i guess he needed to sell it and he emailed me a few days after the auction and asked if i'd be interested in buying it for my high bid of 13. The car is in CO but the owner is moving to Florida and is gonna bring it by SC (my home) on the way for me to check it out, in exchange for me paying half the cost of renting a uhaul car trailor.

According to him there is no rust anywhere on the car, but there are a few bubbles in the paint. Do bubbles always mean rust, or coudl there be another cause? He said its the original #'s matching 350 block but not the heads, and an original SS car. He said as far as he knew the interior was original and in good shape. Obviously the paint color is not original and i noticed that the z stripes were too narrow and too close to each other.

THe car has power disc brakes from a '91 z28 on the front w/ new pads. Recently rebuilt transmission, new clutch, 12 bolt rear, crager mag wheels. 215/275 tires. CD player (some say its not orignial, but i'd rather be able to listen to cd's personally, so this is a plus for me) He said all the gauges work as well as the headlights/tailights/break lights, turn signals. He said the floor pans and trunk were in good shape. I'm not sure if all the body panels are original or not, he said he didn't know if they were or not but that as far as he knew nothing had been replaced.

He said it was the original holley carb?, but the previous owner had removed the choke? Whats the significance of this? Its got an HEI ignition? what does that entail exactly? He said it usually started right up, how is cold starting affected by lack of choke and upgraded ignition?

Any thoughts on the value of the car are greatly appreciated. If the cars in good shape i'll probably buy it this weekend when he comes by on his way from CO to FL.

yeah the zstripes are wrong, but thats not too important since its not stock color/paint. Looks pretty clean, Its probably worth the 14k its at right now but I would think you could get a car like that for a bit cheaper. personnaly if u wanted a reliable daily driver 1st gen I'd consider one with efi engine swap or just the efi swapped. You can do carb mileage shouldnt be too terrible but if I had one for a daily driver I might look into that. If you really wanna buy that one its a good deal I think and since u live in florida using it for a daily ride should be fine. Just buy a good carb book so you can learn everything about them... which Im about to do since unlike my dad I have no clue and there a few books on 69 camaros that you can search on amazon for. Good Luck

Bubbles under the paint always mean rust, in my experience. I've seen horrendous sins under shiny paint, like a quarter panel on a 69 composed mostly of Bondo about an inch thick. Examine very carefully.

SS350's didn't come with Holleys. Only Z28's and L78 396's got the Holley. It originally came with a Qjet.

I like Holleys, but gas mileage isn't their strong point. Performance is. But it's perfectly suitable for daily driver duty. My 71 was my daily driver for years with a Holley.

Choke usually gets pulled under the assmuption that carb will flow more and a few HP will result. It won't, unless the choke horn is milled off and the entry is smoothed/radiused. I always remove the choke assy just to get it out of the way. Car can get by without it in warm climates, no problem. Just pump the gas a few times to start it, and hold the rpm at 1,200 till it warms up.

HEI is a popular upgrade so that points (and their attendant adjustment) is a non issue. I still run points in my 71. Just make sure that power to the HEI was run directly. Points will run power through a resistor or resistance wire in stock applications to reduce current through the points. Keeps them from burning up too quick.

Heck yeah bubbles mean rust... or even worse... shoddy boddy work.

Furthermore... look at those seat covers!!!

1st... they are way too loose... second... they're missing the emblems.

Furthermore, don't neccessarily assume its a real SS 350.

Get the numbers from the block and run them yourself to determine if it really is a numbers matching car. If it comes up as a real matching 350, then its definitely an SS.

IMO, its not worth $13K. Negotiate if you really like it, but I'd check those bubble areas in person first.

If it really has a matching #'s engine and is mostly rust free, then it might be worth that price. But if you're going to use it as a daily driver, why pay extra for an original engine car? I recently bought a 68 with a 94 Lt1/4L60E and 4 wheel disc brakes and it's truly rust free with fresh paint. I'll have about the same into it as that price range when it's done and it will be a modern fuel injected car.

I've got brand new coated headers, full aluminized 2-1/2" exhaust with Hooker Aerochamber mufflers, rocker moldings, wheel opening moldings, rear leaf springs, master cyl and booster all waiting to go on the car. The wheels and tires are brand new with 0 miles. I got the car in Nov and haven't even driven it yet. The gauges still need to be hooked up somehow. I think I have around $14K into it and the body is rock solid with a new paint job. I bought it off Ebay. It's an original AC car, but it's missing some components and I would need to mate the LT1 compressor with the old stuff to get it working.

I think it's a pretty nice car, but see if you can get the price down.

Bubbles DO NOT ALWAYS mean rust.

Bubbles can be a result of poor metal preparation.
It may be dust/grease/water etc...

Have someone who knows look at it.

Get a mechanical... look at avarage prices ect...

Looks really nice though.
