Tax Return shopping list, have a couple ?'s
Tax Return shopping list, have a couple ?'s
I have made my shopping list for my tax refund....
Have a couple questions
1) The Harmonic Damper....6 3/4" or 8"
2) Water Pump......short or long
3) Cooling Fan....do I have to have a clutch, or can I bolt it direct to pump
4) My oil filter is the OLD style....I am ordering part# TRD-1024 from summit to convert it to spin on style....anyone have experience with this
I am building off a bare block, one of those 010 020 good metal content blocks, so I have to buy pretty much everything.
Thanks for all the help, and I may be back with a couple more questions soon, thanks

1. You can use either size dampener as long as it's neutral balanced for a 350 or smaller engine. stroker 383s require an 8" unbalanced 400-style dampener along with an unbalanced 400-style flexplate or flywheel.
2. Long. Everything past about 1967 uses the long pump except maybe some 'Vette applications.
3. Use the clutch-style. It uses a LOT less power than a solid-bolted fan in the upper RPMs. It'll also keep the fan noise down- it won't "roar" at higher RPMs.
4. No experience. The "010" block should have a regular oil filter boss on the side- all you need is the little bolt-in adapter that goes inside it so you spin on a new canister-style filter. You can swipe this part off any junkyard small block Chevy- they're pretty much all the same in my expereince. But they built the "010" block over a LOT of years so maybe some of the early ones were different and require a special adapter.
Don't forget the little things you'll need like a fuel pump pushrod and the oil pump driveshaft. Everyone forgets about those things.
