Question Stall Converter?

Hey,
Could someone explain what a stall converter is? How does this benefit your car/not benefit?
Thanks!

A torque converter is a fluid coupling between the engine and the transmission. A "stall" converter (a torque converter with a higher stall speed than a stock one) basically allows your engine to rev higher before the car starts to move. You kinda slip it. It benefits your car at the dragstrip because when you rev up against the brake, it will allow the engine to go to a higher speed....hopefully in the engines powerband. You get better et's.
The negatives are that slip creates heat, so you probably want to run a trans cooler.

Heres some FAQ's about torque converters and stall speed.

Where did you see $300, the most I saw for th-350s and TH-400s were $190. I asked them to send me some info.

All convertors are stahl converters. Basically, stahl is the highest rpm the engine will spin before the converter supplies too much pressure and engine tops out. You really need a translock to check this. Different comanies rate their TCs differently, Brake or Flash. One of the most misunderstood things around. PLUS they react differently in different engines.

Right I was reading that the stall speed they list, is actually very vauge. Its really based on how much torque your engine spits out. If you have a 2400 convertor hooked up to a 580 lbs/ft it will probably actually start moving the car around 3000
