Shorties vs. long tubes

What are the sound differences and performance between the two? Are short tubes easy to put on with the motor in the car? I need to know this before I install my new engine here in a day or two... ThanX, l8erZ

Shorties allow you to keep your cross braces, seeing as how you have a Z/28. Long tubes will give a bit more power; the more HP the engine makes the more they will help. You'll have to remove your braces though for them to fit. Install some subframe connectors and weld them in if you havent done so already. On a street motor like yours, shorties should be okay. Either will be a maked improvement over the factory cast iron manifolds.

One other thing; I see you plan to run Dynomax race bullets; those things are LOUD. I mean, as in annoyingly hugely LOUD. They are only a few decibels better than having no mufflers at all. I'd run a better street muffler if it was me. Maybe Super Dynomax's, Welded UltraFlos, or even a Flowmaster, but definitely not the race bullets. Unless you *really* like an annoyingly LOUD exhaust (and potential problems with the local cops), I'd run something better for the street, esp. with your mild engine combo.

Just an opinion.

Well, I like loud, lol... And there won't be any problems with the local cops... Hehe, I can assure that one for sure. I never had heard these, and I like it loud... Is it too much tho? I heard Series 10 Flowmasters behind a set of headers, and it sounded really nice. Those are their race series... NEWayZ, what do you think about options there?

Also, what about installing these after the motor is in the car?

If you havent heard what a set of race bullets sound like, I can assure you you wont be able to tell the car even has mufflers on it, its that loud and raucous. They really werent designed for the street, only to get around the 'must have muffled exhaust' rules in various NMCA type fastest street car races.

You might think they are cool until you have to take your car on a trip somewhere. After an hour or two of those things blaring away, you might have trouble hearing for a bit. Bring ear plugs.

When I had the bullets on my 79, it was very loud. It is not the best muffler for long trips or cruising for that matter. I could not even hear the radio in my own car without trying to blow the speakers. But people would sure know when I was coming down the road. One thing to note though, when I took the bullets off and replaced them eith some aero chambers I pickup just over a tenth of a sec in my 60 ft time at the track.

If you can fit them I would use shortys. I couldnt find a decent pair that would fit a 4spd car. I wanted to avoid scraping as much as possible and the shortys fit really nice. I doubt there is much of a sound difference.
Good Luck.
