Replacing upper fuel fill neck....

Just ordered a replcement from CI. I honestly havent looked at how it attaches to the main fill tube - wether it bolts on or slides on but in any case - this will fix my loose gas cap.

Anyone ever do this?

I have the tank out of my 69 Camaro in the back yard, and the fill tube does not look like it is bolted in, or just in with gaskets. I think it is soldered in. I can lift it by the tube and it does not budge.

On a '68, it's held to the body by four screws and it has a neoprene hose (6"?) to connect it to the neck on the tank. I did this on mine. One pc of advice-when you paint the filler neck-mask off EVERTHING that the gas cap will touch. In fact, if I did it again, I'd install the cap on the filler neck and put tape as close to the cap as possible. Then remove the cap and mask it where the cap was and pull off the first pc of tape. The reason why I'd do it this way is because I painted the whole thing and then the fit was so tight that I couldn't even get the cap on! Believe me, TOTAL PITA to get it to fit after that!

Hey YZguy, are you talking about the portion of the filler neck that is actually welded to the tank? About 4" long, I think? Not too sure about 69's, but the upper part of the filler tube that the gas cap actually screws into is like 10-12" long-I think? It's been a couple of years since I did this.

OOOK. Yeah, there does appear to be a big difference between 67-8's and the 69. The one for 69 appears to be one piece from the gas cap to the tank. For 68, there's a filler neck, tank to neck hose with 2 clamps, and a filler neck sleeve, leading down to the 4" stub coming off of the tank itself. All according to my Rick's first gen catalog.

camrat - good advise. I just looked at mine and see your point. Should be simple. Just worried before finding out it bolts on that it had to be welded on. I went out a few months ago and bought a new gas cap thinking it was the problem but realized it was the neck which wore down.

"Note: Photo shows similar 69 tank which has an integral filler neck - 67-68 does not"

I ran into the same problem on my '68 RS. I was however able to bend the part of the lip back into shape to allow for a better seal and a better positioned cap. I had to remove the fill pipe to do it though, just to make sure I didn't scratch the paint.

I wish I had thought that far a head when I went to install the new SS cap on the blue 67 coupe. I ended up chipping the paint where it would show. Luckily it came off in one piece, and I was able to super glue it back on. Yeah... I know, sounds cheesy but it still looks good.
