Recomending timing on my 327 with the new cam
i am gonna be doing some tuning this weekend on my 327 and want to know what timing you guys recommend. I have world s/r torquer heads, with crane cam race valve springs, crane 222 roller cam with 509 lift, RPM air gap intake, speed demon 750cfm carb and I will be running 91 octane, Thanks for the help.
If you have flat tops, your compression ratio is around 10-1. I'd start at 10 initial, bring it all in by 2500, and limit total to 36. Unless the head manufacturer says different. A lot of newer head chamber designs are more efficient, so some run best with a lot less timing than the old heads needed. If you have a higher stall converter, you might get away with 12-14 initial, but still limit total to 36.
Something to keep in mind: a lot of times you can be agressive with the timing on a street engine running around the hood. But if you take it to the track and run it down the full quarter, it will ping in high gear at the top end of the track under full load. If you uncork the headers, you probably won't even hear it. If you are lucky your plugs will let you know, if you aren't you pistons will give you the bad news.
You can either back down the timing to be safe, or toss in a couple of gallons of leaded race gas for protection at the track.
