Question Power Steering?

I know that power steering takes power away from the car, but my goal is to have a car that I can be aggressive with the corners as well as the strip.
So I was thinking that power steering would make it easier for me to "handle" the car.
I do plan hope to build the suspension to help in this area.

So a couple of questions:
Would power steering help in cornering the vehicle?
Would a manual low ratio steering box be a better solution?
Is there a problem with shifting at 7000 with power steering?

Thanks for any help,

MTmace

Re: Power Steering?

It does take power from the car, but not that much really...
I've driven with it and without it, and If I was racing through corners, I'd keep it.
I've also never had a problem with pumps at high RPM's.

Re: Power Steering?

Removing the power steering belt is worth about a tenth on the 1/4 in my car. For cornering, a box with a better ratio/feel would defintely be worth it. The box in my 71 feels like crap compared to the one in my 98 SS or the one in my previous daily driver, an 89 Formula WS6.

Re: Power Steering?

Thanks for your input.
To clerify it is better to have a quick ratio gear box over power steering.
So if I get a manual quick ratio gear box I should be set.

Re: Rack and pinion

I don't know what kind of car you have, but I'll assume a 1st gen. A quick ratio power box with the correct valving is probably what you're after. AGR can tailor a box to feel anyway you want, which is why later cars feel so much better. They offer fast ratio boxes that will bolt in. A 2nd gen box is a bolt in and a 14 to 1 ratio is available. There are 2 power pitman arm lengths you can use. (as well as 2 manual ones) A longer arm will speed up the response some for transitions. The rack kits I have seen use slow ratio racks and the fitment leaves something to be desired and header clearance can be screwed some by the shaft arangement.

Re: Power Steering?

I myself, have thought of using a clutch off an air conditioner to shut the power streering pump off when racing and turn back on when driving normal.
there should be a clutch on some car that would match the shaft and have the same diameter of pulley. I figure wire it to a rocker switch and you would be set. Anyone have any thoughts?
