Need help with infp on 400sbc heads

A friend has some heads that suppose to be 400sbc heads. I can not look for myself but what are the serial numbers for 400sbc heads. He's telling me the numbers he is seeing is g273 or 462824

none make sence to me but.... Can someone help identify these heads.

Well those numbers dont look right. Here is a link to a good site with a lot of info http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm If they are truley factory 400 heads they will have the steam holes in them ( any sbc head can be drilled to make work ). What are you working on? I'm currently building a 408 for my project car. Have done a lot of research on what heads work good and so fourth. Any questions shoot me a PM.

Re: Need help with infp on 400sbc heads

long story short my friend and his grandfather were installing a new motor into his 87 GTA and the motor was half way in when his grandfather died, so all we know is what he was talking about since he was the one with all the info and most was in his head. All i have to go on is what he remembers what his grandfather was telling him. I wan't to say is a 350 block more or less oem style besides cam, and a 400sbc heads.

I talked him into the LT1 intake and before the LT1 intakes get drilled for the heads the guy wants to know what heads exactly they are so can drill the holes correctly. So i want to be 100% sure its a 400sbc heads so.....

My friend said the 462824 , now the 8 he said kinda looks like a 6 with a weird squigley at the top so he thought 8 instead of 6... i will going over to his house sunday to look for myself.

thanks for the into whatsup, i think they are 400sbc, but......

400 heads on a 350 is a recipe for blowing head gaskets often

I have a 406 sbc in my Laguna. I use 350 heads on my car with steam vents drilled in them. To use 400 sbc heads on a 350 just make sure you use 350 head gaskets so they steam vents are sealed up.

if you say so, every 350 w/400 heads I've worked on had 350 head gaskets and blew a gasket at least once a year

Re: Need help with infp on 400sbc heads

Maybe I've just had good luck, but I had a pair of 882's for my 400 that I didn't use. So I put them on a 350 in my Oldsmobile. Been on the engine almost 3 years.

are you using the gasket only to seal the holes. Would there be any other way to better seal the holes?

462824 should read 462624 that casting number was used a lot of different engines mostly 350's they have 76 cc combustion chambers which with flat top piston will give you about 8.9:1 compression (not alot) but pump gas friendly. As for using 350 head gaskets I personally have had good luck with this method.
