kid needs help wit SB

hey im new here and have a problem with my 327 SB.
First ill list the mods:
it was bored .40 over, ported heads, forged domed pistons with 10.5:1 compression and forged rods, new flywheel, Comp cams, weand intake manifold, edlebrock carb 650cfm, 2800 stall super holeshot torque conveter, rebuilt turbo-hyromatic 350 trans with B&M transpack, HURST quarter stick, 10 bolt possi rear, hooker headers, solid motor mounts , aluminum roller rockers, edlebrock waterpump, and MSD ignition and coil.
(just off top of my head)

the problem (most likey a dumb one) is this:
the motor will start right up. It will run very nice but once the coke goes off (electric) it will stumble
-If i do not very lightly tap the gass once and a while it will stall
-It does not accelerate smoothly
-some kind of liquid coming out of tail pipes (???)
-second i hit the brakes (power) the RPMs drop so low that it stumbles and soon stalls

Is this a timing issue, a air/fuel ratio issue, or me being stupid issue (most likey)
i refuse to run the motor like this till i find the problem
plz help

-by the way it is a 67 camaro ss CAMARO

What kind of fluid is coming out of the tailpipes? Check the engine vacum with a guage? If so what was the reading? Pull the plugs and take a look.

Fuel problem, do you have proper fuel pressure?? Electrical? Fluid in the exhaust, all the time or just when it is cold? Is it anti freeze or just normal condensation? You suggest timing. Did you set the timing with at light? Was the cam degreed?

Let us know what u find.

Re: kid needs help wit SB

couldnt get any time to work on it but the fluid is def not coolant (that would really sux)

it has a micanical hooly fuel pump at 8.5psi

dont have a vacume gauge so i might run and get one later today

i will pull a plug out tonight

the fluid only seems to come out when the RPMs grow idle=no fluid WOT gently sprays a little

when i pull the plug ill also cheakl the timing but i think i am doin somehting wrong....

when cheakng it i should pull the vacume advance and plug the port for that on the carb right? anything eles i am missing?

Sounds like you're running rich as hell if you ask me. Put a lighter to the tail pipes and see if they blow fire. With 8.5 PSI of fuel pressure, you're probably overcoming the float stops in the carburetor and flooding out. If you have a regulator, try dropping the pressure down to 6 PSI. That 650 Edelbrock, even with stock tuning, shouldn't flood out all on its own unless it's broken. I'd imagine fuel pressure is your problem. Does the car smell like gasoline when it's running?

i belive this kid is right, u need a car that can handle the fuel PSI but most wont so ull need to get a regulator to bring teh psi down or a lower PSI pump

Re: kid needs help wit SB

i had only about a half hour to work on the ride tonight, but then i had a fire call

i lowered the fuel pressure (dont have gauge anymore but will buy one ASAP) This stoped all fluid from coming out the tail pipes.

I want to thank everyone with their help so far

Now for the idle problem....
I have the timing set at 2degrees advanced. The car will start right up. The motor will warm up and the coke will be off and the RPM will be around 900 (told it should be round 700 but can easly be adjusted)

If i lower to idle speed it will instantly stall
at 900RPM at idle.....it will run for 2minuts and then stumble for about 20-30 seconds and then stall
Once it begins to stumble,if u tap the gass it will run fine for another 2 minuts and begin to stumble again
THX ALL

2 degrees advanced timing? That might be your problem right there. Pull and plug your vacuum line to the distributor (if you're running an HEI), and then set the timing to 12 degrees advanced. From there the car should at least idle, so you'll be able to fine tune the timing to meet your needs. Man, at 2 degrees advancement, that car must fall flat on its face when you hit the gas!

Re: kid needs help wit SB

just put the timing at 13 degrees (ran slightly better than 12)

IT IDLES AMAZINGLY WELL

I LOVE U GUYS lol

i am very excitd right now and want to go to race way park right now and run it lol (should i wait for insurance and plates?? LOL)

i was sitting in my car with a smile from ear to ear

so it is idling at 900 rpm and sounds amazing
there is no more liquid coming outa the pipes (think PSI is at 5-6 now)
but there is one more problem, the idle drops to 500 and stumbles and dies when the brake is on and the tranny is in gear (auto, turbo 350, want a 5 speed so bad!!!)

how can i fix this problem

by the way u guy have no idea how much u have helped me

i hap ppl telling me my motor was blown, my carb (BRAND NEW) was junk, and that my head gasket was fried. Now a few guys who never heard or seen my ride fixed it lol

Re: kid needs help wit SB

When I first started out on F-Bodies this site helped me out a lot. I'm glad I'm able to finally help somebody out And good old Englishtown. I used to live in Jersey and could hear those cars from my house in Old Bridge at night.

Not sure what to do about the stalling while in drive. I've only owned two automatics in my life, and both were very mild cammed stock engines. Sounds to me like you need to just raise your idle though. You might not be creating enough vacuum while in drive to power the brake booster.

Thats great to hear and I am happy for you!
What are the rpms when you put it in drive and stand on the brake? Try to set your idle so it is at 600 with it in gear and foot on the brake. It will take two people to do it.

I usually set my timing with a set back timing light. Takes all the guess work out of it.

By the way don't put yourself down as being dumb, or what ever because your not. Your just lacking in experience. We all started some where and we all learn something new everyday. The only reason I know a little more is because I have had the opportunity to mess up more stuff and had to fix it again.

What are the specs on that cam you have in that 327? If it's radical, you'll have pretty sorry vacuum at idle. That'd stall you out when you hit the brakes for sure

Oh, and if you think you're retarded, search up some of my original posts!

Re: kid needs help wit SB

thx i feel better about asking these kinda q's

when i stomp on the brake and have the tranny in gear it falls to 400-450rpm.
I raised idle to 1000 (litle high dont ya think) and it dropped to 500 and still stalled after stumbling for a little while (2mins-2:30)

i cant wait to get this ride on the road...
i have been building it for the past 2 years
